Dai looked like a wounded animal after the revelation with Fur Grease, and it broke my heart. Which was ridiculous, because less than 48 hours earlier he’d been threatening me.

But as much as Dai had done to me, I found myself unable to blame him. He was a victim of the system. Sure, he could’ve easily avoided a lot of the trouble he’d gotten himself into, but the more I got to know him, the more sympathetic I felt towards his plight.

What kind of an Enforcer was I, siding with my captor like this? It was Stockholm Syndrome 101. But I never really did choose to join them. It was a lack of choice that forced me. Maybe all this time I’d been waiting for someone like Dai to come along and show me why I was wrong.

We headed off with no idea of where we were going. Dai was too distraught to think straight and I didn’t know enough about London to suggest anywhere. So we ended up in Soho, because I knew that there were bars there, and I knew that it was gay there. And if we couldn’t be around real punks, we could at least be around real gays.

“All these humans are staring at us,” Dai muttered, as we sidled into The Duke of Wellington.

“They’re probably staring at us because we’re dressed like punks and handcuffed to each other.”

“Oh yeah. Forgot about that.”

We ordered some beers. Then some more. Then back to the vodka—wasn’t it a terrible idea to mix alcohol like this? Dai insisted it was fine, “because we’re gragonsss”.

“So tell me, what did you reaaally think of it?”

I smirked. “I guess I don’t have to lie anymore. I think it was a lazy rip-off of The Sex Pistols with the words changed to be about shifters.”

“Oh, so you do know some punk music.”

“Only what my dad listened to. They weren’t bad, but I think they’ve set a bit high expectations of themselves.”

“Maybe we need the shifter equivalent of Ariana Grande. Some foxy pop star who’ll write catchy jingles about our rights.”

I laughed, choking on my beer. “You’re funny.”

“Well, obviously. Otherwise you wouldn’t still be here.”

“The handcuffs don’t help, either.”

He shrugged. “You could’ve escaped by now. I’m sure of it.”

“True. But even I’m not cruel enough to leave you when you’re like this.”

“Ouch!”

“But you probably wanted me to leave so you could get some tail at that concert.”

Dai gave me a funny look. “They were all humans, don’t you remember? I don’t do that anymore.”

We stared into each other’s eyes. I would’ve turned away if I wasn’t drunk. He had beautiful eyes, come to think of it, a glittering emerald green, topped off with streaks of gold.

“You know,” I said, my mouth moving before my brain did, “you’re pretty cute. When you’re not interrogating me.”

“You’re pretty cute when you’re not strangling me.”

Then I did something stupid. I leant forward and kissed him. He grabbed the back of my head, pulled me closer, his tongue exploring all my cavities.
